Study Tour of the Karahori area [7月 09,2014 ]

On May 20, the Practical Japanese Course students made a study tour of the Karahori area. First we had the guided tour in the area and after that we held a workshop titled ‘Charms of Nippon from foreigner’s point of view.’ Mr. Kojoma, the staff member of ‘Karahori Club,’ led us around the Karahori area, showing us many examples of reformed old houses now used as a shop or a cafe etc., as well as traditional row houses and narrow alleyways with the flavor of old Japan before the World War II. We also visited a Katsuo-bushi (dried bonito) shop, ‘Maruyo,’ founded in 1765 and located in the Karahori shopping street. Mr. Okada, the shopkeeper, showed us the inside of the shop and gave an explanation about the traditional Japanese house, and after that we experienced the dried bonito shaving there.
