The Center for Japanese Language and Culture (CJLC) was first established as the Special Course for Foreign Students at Osaka University of Foreign Studies in 1945. Since then, CJLC has been supporting our Country’s policy to accept foreign students by acting as the basic institution for the education of Japanese language and culture for Japanese Government Scholarship students for more than half a century. Until now, the Center has produced 4000 graduates, and accepts around 150 Government Scholarship students from up to 50 countries around the globe every year. Aside from the preparatory courses of Government Scholarship students of undergraduate level and the training of students under the Japanese Studies Program, CJLC also contributes to the reinforcement of the development of Japanese Language and Culture learning around the world by establishing partnerships with 20 institutions overseas. December 1921 Osaka School of Foreign Languages founded. May 1949 Osaka University of Foreign Studies established. April 1954 Special Course for Foreign Students opened. Research Students (Japanese government scholarship students) first enrolled. June 1969 Annual Journal, "Japanese Language and Culture" first published. April 1977 Chinese and Indonesian government-sponsored students enrolled. M.A. program in Japanese Language Studies established. October 1980 Teacher Training Students first enrolled. October 1985 Students for Japanese Studies first enrolled. April 1987 B.A. program in Japanese language studies in the Faculty of Foreign Studies established. April 1991 The Center for Japanese Language (CJL) established in place of the Special Course for Foreign Students. Undergraduate Students (Japanese government scholarship students) first enrolled at the Center for Japanese Language. January 1997 New building completed for the Center for Japanese Language. April 1997 Classes begin at the new building. The graduate School of Integrated Studies in Language and Society established. October 1999 Program for Short-Term Exchange Students established> October 2000 Master's Program in Japanese Studies for International Students established October 2002 Doctor's Program in Japanese Studies for International Students established March 2005 Japan-Europe International Symposium "The Future of Japanese Studies Programs in Europe" April 2005 CJL was renamed as the Center for Japanese Language and Culture (CJLC).
